The word “oil” was made out of ice and installed outside the Westfield Galleria Mall in St. Louis, Missouri on Black Friday, the largest shopping day of the year. Throughout the day, shoppers walked by the typographic sculpture on their way in or out of the mall, and watched the word melt, forming a puddle on the dark slate sidewalk. The installation speaks to the impermanence of our natural resources by using a form that visibly disappears over the course of a day. As we documented the process, viewers would stop and strike up conversation. Some felt it was a waste of time, some said they loved it. The interaction and dialogue proved to be the most important part of the experience.
