In the spring of 2008, we created a visual identity for Respond Design, the student-run initiative for sustainability at RISD. The color palette excluded the color green to move toward a new aesthetic associated with sustainability. The materials palette utilized found and recycled scraps. We designed a logo as a stencil that any community member could customize. This tactic allowed collective authorship of the group’s identity. We also created an interactive, online “hub” as a place for students from all majors to find out about sustainability meetings, initiatives and classes.
