Through a series of interviews about sustainability efforts on campus, it we became apparent that many students are unaware of the efforts being made by RISD's staff. For example, since Ginnie Dunleavy’s arrival as Director of Dining and Retail, she has initiated the C.A.R.E.S. program (Community, Action, Recycling, Environment, Sustainability), which has increased the RISD’s green rating by 80 while establishing a commitment to purchasing local goods. We worked with the staff of the dining halls and retail establishments to communicate their efforts to the student body. Dining and retail felt personally invested in their efforts, and wanted the message to be true to their voice. The small print on the poster reads “We try wicked hard...” and lets students know all that goes into the selection process for food in our dining halls (free-range beef, local milk and eggs) and items in our stores (from sweatshop-free t-shirts to notepads made from recycled materials). A sticker system was implemented campus-wide to inform students of their purchasing choices.
